Sano Turdiev is not into fast fashion.

“Recently there’s been a lot of noise around Uyghurs doing forced labor in China for all these major global companies. Of course, it’s hard to boycott all of those brands but we all need to be aware of these things and more mindful of where we buy our stuff. As soon as I found out about it, I went and donated most of the clothing I owned from those brands. It’s devastating but that’s how fast fashion mostly is.”

It’s fitting, then, that the model covers Rollacoaster’s AW21 issue wearing this jacket: the winning entry of the global "Real Leather. Stay Different" competition.

“Real Leather. Stay Different” is an organisation setting out the case for leather as the future of sustainable fashion. Not only is it renewable, it’s designed to last for years - a good leather jacket only gets better with age, after all. Their competition called on young designers all over the world to interpret the beauty, sustainability and versatility of leather in any way they desired, and create the best leather article they could. Emily Omesi designed this winning jacket, inspired by cell scans, Victorian children’s clothing and 80’s outerwear silhouettes.

Rollacoaster sat down with model Sano Turdiev, young designer Emily Omesi, and the other national winners of the RLSD competition - for a series of interviews about sustainable fashion, the appeal of leather, and how we can all use our creativity to make the world a better place.
