Wes Nelson is, quite literally, a ray of sunshine on a cloudy London day. Hiding out in his hotel room wearing a fluorescent orange Balenciaga T-shirt for our Zoom chat, the one-time Love Island star has found his focus in music and is riding high on the buzz surrounding his debut solo single, “Say Nothing”.  Now an artist, singer and songwriter with nearly one million single sales in just over a year he’s well on his way to achieving his childhood dream.
Penned by Wes, with frequent collaborator Ayo Beatz, the Afrobeat-infused track has a tropical vibe and an infectious hook. “It was one of the first songs that I wrote. I wrote it the day after “See Nobody”, but we’re so many songs in now,” says Wes, referencing his hit track with Hardy Caprio, which reached number three on the UK singles chart back in October 2020 and has been streamed over 113 million times globally. Despite being relatively new to the music industry, Wes clearly has a talent for singing and songwriting, as well as the drive to keep propelling himself forward as an artist.
Wes breaks in to song. “Say nothing, say nothing…” His vocals sound just as silky smooth as they do on the track. Having successfully distanced himself from his reality TV roots – no mean feat in the UK where it can often be difficult to transition from one form of entertainment into another – Wes is fast becoming one of 2021’s breakout music stars.
In our AW21 issue, Wes Nelson shares his ambitions to crack America, the US R&B star who inspired him growing up and the peers that he hopes to collaborate with in the very near future.
